If every American family planted just one tree, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere would be reduced by one billion lbs annually. This is almost 5% of the amount that human activity pumps into the atmosphere each year.

Tree stewardship workshops

Urban trees are essential to residents in the City of Toronto. Trees provide numerous environmental and health benefits and are relatively cheap and easy to maintain. By sequestering harmful pollutants, providing shade and moisture, and improving air and water quality, trees are a long-term solution to today’s complex environmental problems.

GreenHere’s tree stewardship workshops are hands-on learning opportunities for children and adults to take ownership of their common grounds. The workshops allow participants to plant trees, shrubs, bulbs, and plants, as well as mulch and water trees in their local schools/ parks. These workshops provide hands-on educational experiences. The role trees play in our environment, the benefits they provide in our everyday life, and different cultural beliefs about trees are topics covered. The workshops are lively, exciting events, especially for the children who invariably participate enthusiastically in their schoolyard greening.

By caring for trees in their local parks, and schools, residents become engaged participants in the care of their community. People are less likely to damage trees if they or someone they know has been involved in the care of that tree. This creates a sense of pride and ownership not only in the trees of the urban forest but in the local community.  GreenHere aims to engage citizens in tree care and knowledge to create life-long appreciation and stewardship of trees.

GreenHere offers full day workshops to private schools and schools outside of the program area for a small fee.  The workshops offer age-appropriate information to all grades of students.  The workshops are an effective, engaging way to get kids thinking about and working for tree stewardship.

The workshop activities include:

  1. Mulching trees

  2. Watering trees

  3. Planting spring bulbs (daffodils, tulips, etc)

  4. Planting climbing vines (beans, morning glories)

  5. Creating a school vegetable/herb garden

  6. Creating new flower beds

  7. Creative edging of flower beds

  8. Making seed bombs for ‘guerilla gardening’ of abandoned spaces

Workshops take place during the spring and autumn, when the weather is mild enough for all ages of children to be outdoors. GreenHere will arrange a drop-off of mulch, provide planting materials and buckets, as well as child-sized shovels and trowels for mulching and digging.

Train-the-trainer workshops

These workshops allow GreenHere to provide training directly to teachers so that teachers can pass on stewardship knowledge to their students far into the future.  These workshops are intimate, informal and hands on.  Train the Trainer workshops run for a half-day.
