Fruit tree harvesting program
in an area of 400 acres, (Bloor St to Davenport Rd, from the CPR/CNR corridor to Lansdowne Ave, includes Earlscourt Park, adjacent GO rail corridor and Wadsworth Park) fruit/edible trees make up 12% of the total 3940 trees inventoried (2007-08).
Community Canopy: Forest to Fruit
GreenHere is pleased to embark on a pilot community fruit tree project in partnership with Not Far From the Tree (NFFTT). We will be conducting community picks with neighbourhood fruit trees and volunteers this year and, pending funding, open up a NFFTT neighbourhood hub in 2010.
Of the almost 4000 Davenport trees inventoried to date, GreenHere has logged the location, size, species and condition of nearly 500 fruit and nut trees! This opens up incredible opportunities for community fruit-picking, which would help address neighbourhood food insecurity, build community engagement, help out the fruit tree owners and build awareness of the benefits of trees.
